My goal for this project was to convey the tone of the story in an appropriate style while paying close attention to each aspect of the design. I made this board book in an ode to my cherished tree. The actual tree is a Banyan tree, but the Gingko leaves pile onto the lawn of my home in college. I learned how to make unique front and back covers that interact well together with the chosen type while staying homey, and simplistic in the font.
My creative partner, Emily Saad, brought my concept to life with the story she created. This project perfectly encapsulates our creative partnership, which I cherish so much! Emily is so great at rounding a project out, ensuring each piece gets its’ love of detail and grace.
A story about facing some risky feats as one ages: I was a cautious kid, avoiding any circumstances of getting a scrape or bruise. I wanted this story to represent when I began to push my limits, edging towards leaping into the sea and quieting my racing mind. Both of these board books gave me experience working with text and spot art placement.
This cookbook was given to me this year by my mom. Beforehand, her father gave it to her, leaving his bookmark in the beef goulash recipe before he passed, which I redesigned. My grandfather was stoic with his emotions and towards his family, so I added playful illustrations to his memorabilia to give him some lightness that he wasn’t fortunate enough to feel. My goal was to make this recipe easier to read and enticing to use.
